A Chance to Reignite the Creative Flame

Lately, I’ve been feeling like I wasn’t tapping into my creative side. As a kid, I was nonstop creative—building hang gliders racing around the garage, and dreaming up all sorts of wild ideas. I loved pottery, drawing, and any artistic outlet, and I missed that spark as an adult.

Moving back to Idaho slowed everything down, and, truth be told, social outings often drift toward drinking. So when the Northwest Submission Challenge came along, it felt like the perfect reboot: a fun, tangible project that didn’t require me to abandon my day-to-day life, but gave me a chance to create, contribute, and connect.

What is the Northwest Submission Challenge?

A local Jiu Jitsu event: This is where athletes from the Northwest come together on a single stage for a night of matches, weight-class and belt-rank pairings, and the thrill of competition.

Family-friendly vibes: Snacks, beer, and wine keep things relaxed, with a welcoming atmosphere that makes it feel like a community celebration rather than just a tournament.

Historic venue: The event takes place at the Egyptian Theatre, a beloved old landmark that adds a nostalgic charm for Boise natives who remember catching films there as kids.

Twice-a-year spectacle: It’s one of the few shows in the Northwest that sticks to a consistent home base, giving the event a sense of tradition.

Why This Project Was Special

Creative revival: Crafting content for social media, from post concepts to captions and visuals, felt like rediscovering a part of me I’d missed.

Community connection: Being part of a local event that brings people together—athletes, families, and neighbors—made the work feel meaningful beyond the numbers.

Nostalgia and place: The Egyptian Theatre isn’t just a venue; it’s a memory lane for many Boise locals. I loved weaving that sense of history into the content.

Highlights from the Experience

The matches kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Some bouts had quick, technical exchanges, while others built tension with slow, strategic grappling. It was a reminder of how sport, art, and storytelling all share the same heartbeat.

The environment was welcoming and relaxed—snacks, drinks, and good company made it easy to focus on crafting engaging, informative, and fun social posts.

Reconnecting with my inner artist, even in small ways, gave me a renewed sense of purpose. It reminded me that creativity isn’t a hobby; it’s a practice I can bring into my everyday work.
